YSU nurse practitioner clinicals in Cincinnati and Southwest Ohio
Greater Cincinnati has big health systems but few open doors for an online NP student from Youngstown State University. TriHealth expects you to name your preceptor up front, Cincinnati Children's takes NP students only from affiliated schools and YSU is not one of them, and UC Health, The Christ Hospital and Mercy Health post no NP student page. Health centers and independent practices carry the search.

Eight counties from Oxford to West Union
This guide follows the Ohio Department of Health's hospital preparedness Region 6: Hamilton, Butler, Warren, Clermont, Clinton, Brown, Highland and Adams counties, with 1,871,090 residents in the July 2025 Census estimates. Hamilton County (Cincinnati, Norwood, Blue Ash) holds 838,418 of them; Butler adds Hamilton, Fairfield, West Chester, Middletown and Oxford, and Warren adds Mason and Lebanon.
East of the city the map turns rural: Clinton (Wilmington), Highland (Hillsboro) and Adams (West Union) are nonmetro under USDA's 2023 codes, while Brown and Clermont count as part of the Cincinnati metro. Cincinnati is roughly 270 miles from Youngstown, which matters little, since YSU's NP coursework is online.
Cincinnati Children's and TriHealth: two published routes, two catches
Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, including its Liberty Township campus, does its own matching: every NP student goes through an APRN Clinical Placement Interest Form and its Advanced Practice Providers office, even when a preceptor has already agreed. Its practicum page requires an active Ohio RN license and enrollment in one of 30 affiliated programs. Youngstown State was not on that list in September 2026, so it is not a realistic source of pediatric hours for a YSU student today. The page adds that most of its preceptors prefer not to be approached directly.
TriHealth runs Bethesda North and Good Samaritan in Cincinnati, McCullough-Hyde Memorial in Oxford and, since September 2, 2025, TriHealth Clinton Regional Hospital in Wilmington, formerly Clinton Memorial. According to its student onboarding page, you confirm that your school holds a student affiliation agreement and certificate of insurance with TriHealth, then email your school, your preceptor's name and your dates before eLearning and badging. The page assumes the preceptor is already committed. YSU also cautions that a new agreement may not finish by the start date (affiliation agreements).
Landmark hospitals and the shared placement system
UC Health (University of Cincinnati Medical Center, West Chester Hospital), The Christ Hospital and Mercy Health's Cincinnati hospitals (Anderson, Clermont, Fairfield, Kings Mills, West and The Jewish Hospital) have no public NP student page. Treat them as landmarks, and if a clinician there offers to precept you, ask your clinical faculty whether YSU can complete the paperwork. YSU's published tie to Mercy Health is its nurse anesthesia program in Youngstown, not an NP route.
These systems share The Health Collaborative's Centralized Clinical Placement System with Cincinnati Children's, TriHealth and Northern Kentucky's St. Elizabeth Healthcare. Its public page lists 18 local nursing programs and does not address graduate NP placement, so it is not your door.
Premier Health's Atrium Medical Center in Middletown and Kettering Health Hamilton belong to Dayton systems whose indexed student pages favor their own employees; the Miami Valley guide has the detail.
Shortage counties and the health centers that serve them
Every county here has an active primary care Health Professional Shortage Area. In the four smaller counties it covers a low-income or other population countywide; in the four larger ones it covers particular tracts or groups.
HRSA's September 2026 data also lists 111 active health center sites run by 15 organizations, 43 of them school-based. For FNP adult, pediatric and women's health hours, they are the densest set of options, and several reach counties the big systems barely touch.

Building five YSU practicums around Cincinnati
YSU highly encourages you to secure your own preceptors, wants each one's details two months ahead, and asks for 90 days' notice to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator if you come up empty, with no promise of a nearby site (finding your own preceptor).
NURS 7061 to NURS 7065 are all primary care, and YSU recommends at least 200 adult, 100 pediatric and 75 women's health hours. With Cincinnati Children's closed to YSU for now, look for pediatric hours in family practices, pediatric groups and school-based health center sites.
NURS 7071 to NURS 7075 need acute care: ICU, hospital medicine, emergency and trauma or a specialty unit, with standalone emergency departments and urgent care also on YSU's list. At TriHealth, secure the hospitalist or intensivist first, because onboarding needs that name.
Working for TriHealth, UC Health or Mercy Health? You may train there, just not on your own unit, under your supervisor or on the clock (workplace rules). Keep practicums on the Ohio side of the river, too: Kentucky is not among the states YSU accepts.

Arrive with a TriHealth preceptor already committed, and ask your clinical faculty about the agreement before settling on the site.
I live in Cincinnati. Can I train in Northern Kentucky?
Plan on Ohio. Kentucky is not one of the states YSU names for its online nursing programs, and YSU's program map marks it unavailable. YSU also ties your RN license to the state where practicum hours happen. If a Kentucky preceptor is your only lead, get a written answer from the Graduate Program Director first.
What happened to Clinton Memorial Hospital in Wilmington?
TriHealth completed its acquisition on September 2, 2025, and the hospital is now TriHealth Clinton Regional Hospital, TriHealth's sixth acute care hospital. Expect TriHealth's student onboarding to apply there, which means a school affiliation agreement on file and a preceptor you name up front.
