Each Youngstown State University nurse practitioner practicum has a start date, and several deadlines hang from it: preceptor details two months ahead, a 90-day notice if you have no preceptor, Exxat documents 30 days before your first practicum, and approval before the first clinical day. Line up five 7-week practicums end to end and those dates begin to overlap. Below is the count, with our own worked example clearly marked as ours.

The deadlines YSU sets

YSU's dates come from two documents, the online FAQ and the 2026-27 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook. Every one is measured back from the first day of a practicum, and the table runs from the earliest to the last.

Reading the 90-day and two-month marks together

The two marks sit about a month apart. In our count, the 90-day date lands 29 to 31 days before the two-month date, depending on which months fall in between.

The natural reading is that the 90-day mark is a checkpoint and the two-month mark is the submission. By 90 days out you should know whether you have a preceptor; if not, that is when YSU wants the Graduate Clinical Coordinator involved, while a month still remains before the details are due. A student who starts looking at the two-month mark has already passed the checkpoint. YSU's exact wording is quoted on finding your own preceptor.

YSU publishes no turnaround for approval itself. The FAQ presents the two-month lead as the time needed for approval without delays, so treat the weeks between submission and the start date as YSU's review window, not as extra search time.

Five 7-week terms, stacked end to end

The table below is our worked example, not a YSU schedule. It assumes Practicum 1 starts in the second fall 7-week term of 2026 and one practicum follows in each 7-week term after it, summer included, using YSU's 2026-27 accelerated online calendar. Two things stand out in this count. After the first practicum, every two-month deadline falls while another practicum is running or in the short gap between terms, so each search happens alongside seven weeks of clinical hours. And the preceptor details for Practicum 5 are due before Practicum 4 has even begun.

The first row also shows why YSU asks you to start at admission. Practicum 1's 90-day mark lands in July, while the student is still in the specialty courses that must be passed with a B before any practicum opens.

Where a new site's agreement fits

One deadline has no fixed length. When a preceptor works at a facility that needs an affiliation agreement with YSU, the FAQ cautions that the negotiation may still be open on the start date, and that you may then need a different site. Until it is signed, the request waits.

Some health systems publish their own lead times. Nationwide Children's student page warns that setting up a new agreement could need anywhere from six months to a year. Cleveland Clinic, whose eligible-school list includes YSU, accepts graduate applications only in set windows months ahead: July through September for placements from January to mid-May, December through February for summer, and March through May for fall, with no exceptions. Questions YSU students ask

Is the two-month deadline counted from the term start or my first clinical shift?

YSU's FAQ words it two ways, the clinical start date and the start of each clinical rotation. The cautious reading is the first day of the 7-week practicum term, since that is the earlier date. If your clinical faculty set a different date, follow theirs.

What if my practicum is less than two months away and I have no preceptor?

Contact the Graduate Clinical Coordinator and your clinical faculty right away. Preceptors must be approved before clinicals start, and the handbook lists failure to begin required clinical experiences among the grounds for administrative withdrawal, so a late search needs YSU involved. Does the 30-day Exxat deadline apply to every practicum?

The handbook ties it to the first practicum: every required document goes into Exxat at least 30 days before that start. After that you keep the documents current, and annual items, the drug screen and background check among them, need renewing in time so a later practicum is not held up. How long does YSU take to approve a preceptor once I submit?

YSU publishes no processing time. The two-month lead is the window the FAQ builds in for approval, so plan on submitting early rather than on a quick answer. If the site also needs an affiliation agreement, the wait depends on the facility as well as on YSU.

Do post-master's certificate students have the same deadlines?
