YSU online nursing for Michigan residents
Michigan is where Youngstown State University's own pages disagree. Its 2026-27 catalog, its August 2026 graduate handbook, all five certificate pages and its program map put Michigan on the list, while the three online MSN pages name Indiana instead. A Michigan nurse eyeing an MSN should get YSU's answer in writing first.

Michigan in YSU's sources, program by program
The MSN rows below are a real split, not a reading question. Michigan has been on the graduate handbook's list since at least the 2022-23 edition, Indiana appeared only in edits to the MSN pages on August 31, 2026, and the map still shows Indiana as unavailable.

What the conflict means for a Michigan applicant
- Ask YSU before you applyPut the question in writing to YSU's online admissions office or the Graduate Program Director: name the MSN you want and your Michigan address, and ask whether you may enroll and complete practicums while living in Michigan. Keep the reply with your records.
- Plan around the written answerIf YSU confirms Michigan, your practicums can run in Michigan, or in Ohio with an Ohio license. If YSU confirms the Indiana list instead, Michigan residence would not meet the MSN's state rule.
- Hold the license YSU requiresYSU wants an active, unencumbered RN license wherever you work and log practicum hours, and in Michigan that means a Michigan license.
Certificate applicants, who already hold a master's, face no split: every source covering the certificates lists Michigan. RN to BSN applicants have only the map, which lists it too. If you might move during the program, read practicums outside Ohio first.
The Michigan Board of Nursing and your license
Michigan is not a compact state; House Bill 4246 would make it one and remains pending. Practicum hours in Michigan therefore run on a Michigan RN license, and any Ohio hours need an Ohio license as well, which the RN license guide covers.
A search of Michigan's board rules and guidance pages found no requirement that a program from another state notify the board, or win its approval, before its students start Michigan clinicals. The board's program standards, which begin at Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10301, are written for schools in Michigan, and when licensing graduates of programs elsewhere it relies on their ACEN, CNEA or CCNE accreditation. YSU's MSN and post-graduate APRN certificates carry CCNE accreditation through December 31, 2032.
NP practice and where Michigan students look
On AANP's map Michigan is restricted practice: controlled-substance prescribing by an NP requires a physician's delegation. Michigan ties NP specialty certification to two things, an active Michigan RN license and passing national certification through a certifier the board recognizes, so confirm both when a Michigan NP offers to precept you.
By the Census Bureau's 2025 figures, Detroit-Warren-Dearborn is the largest metro at about 4.39 million people, followed by Grand Rapids-Wyoming-Kentwood near 1.18 million, Lansing-East Lansing near 480,000 and Flint near 401,000. Michigan Medicine (University of Michigan Health), Trinity Health Michigan, Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health and McLaren Health Care are the large systems. Search them on their own student terms and hold every site to YSU's fit rules: a primary care setting for FNP hours, an acute care setting for AGACNP, and never your own unit or supervisor.

Can Michigan residents enroll in YSU's online FNP program?
YSU's sources split. The catalog, the graduate handbook and the program map include Michigan, while the online FNP page lists Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Ask YSU's online admissions team for a written answer that names the FNP and your state, apply only once you have it, and keep it until you graduate.
Does an Ohio multistate RN license work for practicum hours in Michigan?
No. Michigan is outside the compact, so an Ohio multistate license stops at the state line. YSU hours in Michigan need an active, unencumbered Michigan RN license. Michigan lawmakers have a compact bill pending, so check the board's page before relying on this answer for a future term.
Can a Michigan physician assistant precept a YSU NP student?
Possibly. Under YSU's 2026-27 graduate handbook, a master's-prepared PA may precept an AGACNP student, and an FNP student for a capped 150 hours after Practicum 1, provided the PA holds a license where the practicum happens, which in Michigan means a Michigan license. The older YSU FAQ rules physician assistants out, so clear it with your clinical faculty first.
What if YSU tells me Indiana, not Michigan, is its fourth state?
Then a Michigan home would fall outside the MSN's state rule. Getting the answer before you apply keeps you from building five practicums on the wrong list, and YSU's map warns that a mid-program change of state can affect your status. The post-master's certificates list Michigan everywhere, but they require a master's first.
