Doing YSU practicum hours where you work

Youngstown State University lets nurse practitioner students complete practicum hours at the organization that employs them, within firm limits: never on your own unit or patient care area, never with your immediate supervisor as preceptor, never while you are on the clock, and never by counting paid shifts as clinical hours. Inside those limits, your employer's other clinics, campuses and departments can be a practical route to a site YSU approves.

Yes to your employer, with firm limits

YSU's online FAQ gives a straight answer: clinical rotations may take place where you work, as long as you follow its rules. The 2026-27 graduate handbook backs the same line from the hours side, stating that employment hours can never substitute for practicum hours, even when you are employed at the clinical site.

The reasoning is easy to see. A practicum puts you in a new role, the advanced practice student, with someone evaluating that role. Your usual unit, your usual manager and your paid shift all pull you back toward the RN job you already do, so YSU keeps the two apart.

Where your own unit ends

YSU's wording is your direct unit or patient care area, and it publishes no longer definition. The clear cases are easy: a med-surg nurse doing FNP hours in the same system's family medicine office, or an emergency nurse doing AGACNP hours in the ICU of a sister hospital.

Harder cases deserve a question before any request goes in. If you float across several units, your patient care area may be all of them. If your clinic shares staff with the practice next door, the boundary may blur. If you changed departments recently, your old colleagues may still treat you as one of the team. In each case, describe your role plainly to your clinical faculty and let them rule before your preceptor signs anything.

One quick test helps: would the patients, schedule and team you see as a student be the ones you see as an RN? If the answer is yes, look elsewhere in the organization.

Supervisors, colleagues and the clock

The FAQ says twice that your immediate or direct supervisor cannot precept you. It is silent on a manager higher up your chain and on a nurse practitioner you work beside every shift, so treat both as questions for clinical faculty. A preceptor with no say over your job evaluation, pay or schedule is the choice least likely to be questioned.

The clock rule leaves no room: no clinical hours while you are being paid as an employee. That rules out practicum time tacked onto the end of a shift, student notes charted during paid time and any overlap between your timecard and your practicum log. The handbook treats misrepresenting clinical hours as unsafe practice, so keep the two records cleanly separate.

Build the calendar first. Each YSU practicum fills one 7-week term, and the clinical hours guide shows how the weekly pace adds up, so block practicum days before you commit to shifts.

The RN to BSN program advises the opposite

If you came through YSU's RN to BSN, the graduate rules may surprise you. For the bachelor's practicum, the FAQ recommends doing the practicum where you work and choosing a nurse in a leadership role, such as a charge nurse, unit manager or shift supervisor. The 2026-27 RN-BSN handbook asks for a preceptor with at least a BSN and a year of leadership experience.

One boundary survives even there: the RN-BSN handbook says students should not do online or preceptorship coursework during scheduled work hours. The difference in advice follows the purpose. The 60-hour leadership practicum studies how your own organization is run, while the graduate practicums build an advanced practice role that has to be observed away from your staff job. The RN to BSN guide covers the leadership preceptor in full.

Using your employer's wider network

Most nurses work for organizations far larger than their own floor, and that is the opening. Map what your employer runs beyond your unit:

  • Primary care and family medicine offices for FNP hours, including pediatric and women's health practices that help with YSU's recommended mix of at least 200 adult, 100 pediatric and 75 women's health hours.
  • Other hospitals in the system for AGACNP hours: an ICU, step-down, hospital medicine or specialty unit on a different campus from yours.
  • Urgent care centers and freestanding emergency departments, which YSU's FAQ lists among acceptable AGACNP settings.
  • The student placement or education office, which may run its own application, windows and paperwork for students, staff included.

Being on staff can help. According to their student pages as indexed, Premier Health gives its own employees priority for placement, and Kettering Health accepts APP rotation applications only from its employees and Kettering College PA students.

Your practicum is still a student experience, though. If the facility requires an affiliation agreement with YSU, it applies to you as to any student, and the handbook says YSU's professional liability coverage is for students in approved clinical experiences, one more reason to keep student hours distinct from your job.

How we help working nurses

Your placement advisor starts with your job: employer, unit, campus, reporting line and shift pattern. We map the parts of your organization that sit outside YSU's limits, then look there for preceptors whose credentials fit your practicum, primary care for NURS 7061 to NURS 7065 or acute care for NURS 7071 to NURS 7075, checked against the preceptor requirements.

When your employer cannot host you, because the right service is full, its application window has closed or an agreement with YSU would not finish in time, we widen the search to independent practices, community health centers and hospitalist and urgent care groups near your home. Either way, the preceptor packet is ready for YSU two months before the practicum and built around your days off. Your clinical faculty approve the final choice. Send us your schedule and program.

Questions YSU students ask

Can a nurse practitioner who works on my unit precept me?

Not on that unit. YSU bars clinical hours in your own unit or patient care area whoever the preceptor is, so that NP could only precept you somewhere they also practice and you do not staff, such as a clinic on another campus. Even then, ask your clinical faculty to confirm the setting is truly separate from your job before you submit.

Can I do YSU clinical hours at my hospital on my days off?

Yes, if the hours fall in a different unit or patient care area, your preceptor is not your supervisor and you are not paid for that time. Days off are the usual way to meet the on-the-clock rule. Your paid shifts at the same hospital never count toward practicum hours, even when the work looks similar.

Is my manager's manager allowed to be my preceptor?

YSU's FAQ names the immediate or direct supervisor and says nothing about managers higher in your chain. Because a senior manager can still influence your evaluations or schedule, raise it with your clinical faculty before asking. A preceptor with no role in your employment is the option least likely to slow approval.

Do I still need an affiliation agreement if I work at the site?

Treat your employer like any other clinical site. Your practicum is a student experience under YSU, and if the facility requires an affiliation agreement with the school, being on staff does not remove that step. Ask your clinical faculty early whether one is already on file, since YSU's FAQ warns that new agreements may not finish before a start date.

What if my job changes during the program?

Recheck every planned site whenever your role changes. A transfer can turn a formerly separate clinic into your own patient care area, and a new manager can change who counts as your supervisor. Tell your clinical faculty and, if a current preceptor is affected, the Graduate Clinical Coordinator before you log more hours.
