The YSU clinical placement process, from admission to your fifth practicum
For Youngstown State University's online FNP and AGACNP students, every practicum runs through the same route: a preceptor you secure, a site and preceptor request YSU wants two months ahead, any affiliation agreement the facility needs, Exxat compliance, and approval from clinical faculty before the first clinical day. Then the route begins again for the next 7-week term. Here it is in order, with each step pointing to the guide that covers it in depth.

The route in nine steps
YSU spreads these steps across its online FAQ, the 2026-27 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook and its program pages. In sequence they form one route, walked once for each of your five practicums.
- Open the request at admissionThe FAQ says the site and preceptor request begins when you are admitted, since it can take many months. The approval timeline counts back from your first practicum.
- Find a preceptorYSU's FAQ places the search with the student; a Graduate Clinical Coordinator works with you throughout. Finding your own preceptor gives YSU's full wording.
- Check the fit against YSU's rulesFNP practicums need primary care settings, AGACNP practicums acute care. At your employer, the site must be off your own unit, away from your supervisor and outside paid hours (workplace rules).
- Submit the preceptor details two months outPreceptor information is due no later than two months before the practicum. No preceptor 90 days ahead? YSU asks you to alert the Graduate Clinical Coordinator.
- Settle any affiliation agreementSome facilities must sign an agreement with YSU before hosting a student, and that can outlast the start date (affiliation agreements).
- Complete Exxat complianceImmunizations, BLS (and ACLS for AGACNP), drug screening and background checks must be in Exxat at least 30 days ahead of Practicum 1 and kept current (compliance requirements).
- Receive clinical faculty approvalClinical faculty approve sites and preceptors. No clinical work begins until compliance is satisfied, a preceptor agreement has been approved and filed, and your Graduate Nursing ID badge is in hand.
- Complete the 7-week practicumYou set a schedule with your preceptor, record hours and encounters in Exxat and need a B to progress (7-week practicum terms).
- Go again for the next practicum

Which YSU students follow this route
The route belongs to YSU's online nurse practitioner tracks: the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner, the MSN Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, and the post-master's FNP and AGACNP certificates, advanced placement options included. The certificate pages send students to the same online FAQ for clinical and preceptor details, so the same deadlines apply to them.
Nursing Education students have a shorter practicum: NURS 7022 carries 50 hours and NURS 7023 another 100. YSU's FAQ clinical answers address only the FNP and AGACNP tracks, and no public YSU text says who arranges the educator practicum, so raise it with your advisor early.
RN to BSN students follow a separate contract process for their 60 practicum hours, covered in the RN to BSN guide. Campus BSN and ADN students are placed in faculty-led clinical lab sections, and DNP Nurse Anesthesia clinicals come through YSU's partnership with St. Elizabeth Health Center School for Nurse Anesthetists.
The paperwork, and the system it lives in
YSU's older online FAQ describes a three-page document that combines the Student Preceptor Agreement with the Clinical Site Request. It carries two signatures besides yours: your preceptor's, and one from a person with signature authority for the clinical request at the site. The FAQ has students download, scan and upload the pages.
The system around those pages has changed. The FAQ names Medatrax for requests and hour tracking and CastleBranch for clearance, while the 2026-27 handbook, the August 2026 revision, names Exxat as the school's official system for clinical compliance, placement and documentation. Treat Exxat as current; the Exxat guide covers how students use it. The forms are not public and open inside YSU's systems once you are enrolled.
A preceptor who agrees to take you is where step four begins, not where the route ends. Until the facility's paperwork, any agreement and faculty approval are complete, your practicum hours cannot start.
Where the route tends to slow down
The slow steps are rarely the conversation with the preceptor. A facility's affiliation agreement can run past the start date, and YSU's FAQ says an alternate site may then be needed. A site that looked right can turn out to be the student's own unit, or a setting outside the track: urgent care appears on YSU's acceptable-site list for AGACNP but not on the FNP list. And compliance items with annual renewals, such as the drug screen and background check, can lapse mid-program.
Each of these is easier to catch before the request goes in than after it. Checking the setting, the reporting line and the facility's contract rules in the same week a preceptor says yes keeps the two-month deadline within reach.
Five practicums, one route each time
Each YSU nurse practitioner track has five 2-credit practicums, taken one per 7-week term and in order, with a B needed in each before the next one opens. YSU's online program pages total them at 750 hours, while the 2026-27 catalog still lists 600 for FNP and 540 for AGACNP, figures that match the older, shorter practicum sequences.
Because the terms run back to back, the request for your next practicum falls due while the current one is under way. Keeping one preceptor for more than one practicum can spare you a fresh search, though YSU still wants the details before each rotation, and its FAQ allows a practicum's hours to be divided among approved preceptors, however many that takes. Questions YSU students ask
Does YSU assign preceptors to online NP students?
YSU's FAQ puts the preceptor search with NP students themselves, and it offers help through the Graduate Clinical Coordinator for students who cannot find one, with the caution that a YSU-arranged site may involve a commute. Clinical faculty approve every site and preceptor, and the handbook describes placements as a collaboration between the Program Director, clinical faculty and approved agencies.
Can I start practicum hours before my preceptor is approved?
No. YSU's FAQ requires preceptor approval before clinicals begin, and the 2026-27 graduate handbook adds that no clinical experience starts until every compliance requirement is met and an approved preceptor agreement is on file. Build your first clinical day around the approval date, not around the preceptor's first open shift.
How long does the whole YSU placement process take?
YSU gives no single figure. It asks you to open the site and preceptor request at admission because it may take many months, sets a two-month deadline before every practicum, and warns that a new affiliation agreement may not be signed before the start date. Plan backward from your first practicum rather than forward from admission.
Do post-master's certificate students follow the same steps?
Yes. YSU's post-master's FNP and AGACNP certificate pages send students to the same online FAQ for clinical and preceptor details, and certificate applicants meet the admission rules of the matching MSN track. The advanced placement options trim the coursework, but all five practicums and their deadlines remain.
Who should I tell if my practicum start is at risk?
The Graduate Clinical Coordinator, according to YSU's FAQ, both when you have no preceptor at least 90 days out and when a preceptor changes.
