YSU affiliation agreements: when a clinical site needs one, and how to keep it from delaying you
Some facilities host a Youngstown State University student only after the facility and YSU have signed an affiliation agreement. YSU's FAQ warns that this negotiation may not be finished by your practicum start, and the graduate handbook makes you responsible for having agreements in place before clinicals. Here is what YSU says, which sites tend to ask for an agreement, and how to keep one off your critical path.

What YSU says about agreements
YSU's online FAQ speaks to this case directly. When a preceptor practices at a facility where an affiliation agreement is needed, YSU cannot promise the negotiations will be finalized before the practicum's start date, and the FAQ says the student might then need an "alternate clinical site."
The 2026-27 Graduate Nursing Student Handbook, revised in August 2026, puts the follow-through on you. Its list of student responsibilities includes seeing that compliance, affiliation agreements and preceptor approvals are all settled before any clinical experience. The archived 2022-23 handbook said it more briefly: site and preceptor contracts had to be in place before the practicum began.
YSU publishes no list of facilities that already hold agreements with it. Asked about affiliations with clinical sites, the FAQ names none and steers students toward opportunities in their own area, with every site and preceptor verified on submission.
What an agreement is, and who signs it
An affiliation agreement is a contract between YSU and the facility that allows the facility to host YSU students. It is separate from your preceptor's consent. A nurse practitioner can say yes to you on Monday while the organization that employs them still has to sign with the university.
YSU's paperwork reflects that split. The older FAQ says the site and preceptor request needs a signature from someone with signature authority for the clinical request, as well as your preceptor's signature. For RN to BSN students, the FAQ says the practicum contract cannot be completed without the signature authority's name, email and other contact information.
Finding out early who holds that authority, and whether the facility has signed with YSU before, is half the work. Neither answer is on YSU's public pages, so it comes from the facility, your clinical faculty or the Graduate Clinical Coordinator.
Which sites tend to require one
Large health systems are the likeliest to insist. According to its student page, Aultman in Canton allows no student experience without an affiliation agreement in place. OhioHealth's page says it is not initiating new affiliation agreements, and Nationwide Children's says a new one may take up to six months to a year.
A few systems already name YSU on their own pages. Cleveland Clinic lists YSU among the schools it will consider, Akron Children's lists YSU among its Family NP schools, and Summa Health lists YSU under its graduate nursing program partnerships. Each of these runs its own application route with its own timing, so read the current page before you plan around one. Private practices and small clinics vary widely, and there is no public YSU list to check them against. Ask each one early.
RN to BSN: a contract for every preceptorship site
YSU spells out a firmer rule for RN to BSN students. The 2026-27 RN-BSN handbook requires a formal legal contract between YSU and every facility used for a preceptorship, and the practicum contract needs the site's signature authority and their contact details.
Timing follows from that. The handbook asks students to submit contract information at least 60 days before Senior Capstone, NURS 4852, to leave room for choosing a preceptor and preparing the contract. Students who are not working and want the nursing department's help finding a site should ask at least two 7-week terms before registering for Senior Capstone. Students living outside Ohio must confirm that a legal clinical agreement can be granted in their state and check that state's own requirements. The RN to BSN guide covers the rest.
How to keep an agreement from costing you a term
- Ask the facility first, not lastAs soon as a preceptor agrees, ask the practice or hospital whether it needs an affiliation agreement with YSU before a student can begin.
- Get the signer's detailsFind the name and role of the person with signature authority at the facility, since YSU's request needs that signature.
- Ask YSU what already existsCheck with your clinical faculty or the Graduate Clinical Coordinator whether YSU already has an agreement with that facility.
- Count back from the start dateAn agreement adds its own time on top of YSU's two-month deadline; the approval timeline shows how the dates stack.
- Keep an alternate site in viewYSU may ask you to switch sites if an agreement stalls, so a second option that is ready to sign protects the practicum term.
A preceptor's yes is not the facility's yes. Confirm the facility's agreement status in the same week your preceptor agrees, not after the request is in.

Does every YSU clinical site need an affiliation agreement?
For graduate NP students it depends on the facility. YSU's FAQ talks about agreements only where the facility requires one, and many large health systems do. RN to BSN is different: the RN-BSN handbook requires a formal legal contract between YSU and every facility used for a preceptorship.
Who negotiates the affiliation agreement, YSU or me?
The agreement is between YSU and the facility, so the university is the party that signs. YSU's public pages do not say which office handles the negotiation. The handbook still holds you responsible for agreements being complete before clinicals, so ask your clinical faculty or the Graduate Clinical Coordinator how to start one and follow its progress.
What happens if the agreement is not signed by my start date?
YSU's FAQ says you might need an alternate clinical site. The handbook bars clinical experiences until agreements and approvals are complete, so the realistic choices are a different site or a later practicum term. Tell the Graduate Clinical Coordinator as soon as the delay becomes likely.
Do I need an affiliation agreement to do clinicals where I work?
It depends on the facility's own student policy. YSU allows clinicals at your employer under its workplace rules, but whether the facility needs an agreement with YSU for students is its call. Ask its education or student office, and read the workplace guide for YSU's limits.
Can a health system that lists YSU still decline me?
Yes. A listing means the system names YSU on its page; each still runs its own application, windows and preceptor matching. Cleveland Clinic, for example, takes applications only in fixed periods and asks students not to call or email its sites or caregivers directly about placements.
