YSU's 2026-27 academic calendar for online nursing students
Youngstown State University runs its online MSN and post-master's certificate courses in 7-week terms: six of them on the 2026-27 accelerated calendar, with four online start points (Fall 1, Fall 2, Spring 1 and Spring 2). Below are the term dates, the graduation application deadlines, one end-date conflict worth knowing, and how each practicum and its preceptor deadline fit onto the calendar.

How YSU's 7-week online terms work
Each online graduate nursing course at YSU lasts seven weeks rather than a 15-week semester. Because the nurse practitioner programs use this accelerated format, the graduate nursing handbook explains, enrollment status is counted differently from the university's usual definition.
Full-time study is two 3-credit core courses in one term, and part-time is one. Once you move into specialty courses the cap drops to one course per term, and that single course counts as full-time. A practicum may not share a term with a didactic course, and the practicums run singly in a set sequence, so each of the five FNP or AGACNP practicums takes a term to itself.
YSU also pays attention to gaps. Sitting out two or more consecutive 7-week terms can mean completing an individualized academic remediation plan before you resume, so arrange any pause with your advisor instead of letting a term simply lapse.
2026-27 accelerated online term dates
These dates come from the accelerated online program section of YSU's 2026-27 academic calendar. The add deadline closes a few days before each term opens, the full refund window runs through the first week, and the final day for a W withdrawal arrives about four weeks in.

University holidays that fall inside these terms: September 7, November 11, November 26 and 27 (with no classes on November 25 and classes back on November 30), January 18, May 31, June 18 and July 5. Campus programs follow the 15-week calendar instead, which runs August 24 to December 12 for Fall 2026, January 4 to May 1 for Spring 2027 and May 10 to August 14 for Summer 2027.
Four online start points, and no summer entry
Every online nursing program page shows the same four starts for 2026-27, each with its own application, document, registration and tuition deadline. The application deadline sits exactly three weeks before classes begin, and documents are due one week after that.

No Summer 1 or Summer 2 start row appears on the online pages, even though the catalog's accelerated calendar carries two summer 7-week terms. Summer coursework is therefore on the calendar, but new students enter in fall or spring. Graduation application deadlines
Graduation happens in December, May and August, and the graduation application sits in the Penguin Portal. The handbook makes meeting the College of Graduate Studies deadline your responsibility, so put these dates in your calendar early.
Last day to apply, 2026-27
- Fall 2026 graduation: Friday, October 2, 2026
- Spring 2027 graduation: Friday, February 12, 2027
- Summer 2027 graduation: Friday, June 18, 2027
Hold those dates against the term table and a pattern appears: each deadline falls inside the first 7-week term of its semester. A student who finishes in Fall 2, Spring 2 or Summer 2 applies before that final term has started.
The Capstone Practicum, NURS 7005, must be your last course, and the online FNP page says it may run alongside your fifth practicum or in the term after it. Know which term your Capstone lands in before you apply. One more thing can hold up a diploma: equipment a clinical site lends you goes back on your last practicum day, and the handbook places a graduation hold when it is not returned after the final practicum.
The Spring 2 end-date conflict
YSU's online start table lists February 21, 2027 as the last class day for the Spring 2 start. That is the day Spring 1 ends, and it falls before Spring 2 even opens on March 8. The catalog's accelerated calendar gives April 25, 2027, and counting seven weeks from March 8 lands on that same Sunday. The rest of the Spring 2 row agrees with the catalog: registration closes March 3, the day the catalog lists as the last day to add.
Use April 25 as the working end of Spring 2, and confirm it with your advisor if a practicum, a graduation plan or a work schedule depends on it. The online program pages and the catalog are published separately, which is why this guide cites both and shows the difference instead of picking one silently.
Mapping your practicums onto the terms
Every FNP practicum, NURS 7061 through NURS 7065, and every AGACNP practicum, NURS 7071 through NURS 7075, fills one 7-week term, and each requires a B before the next may begin. Five practicums in a row mean five term starts, and each start carries its own preceptor deadline two months earlier.
The table counts back from the 2026-27 term starts still ahead. These are our own calculations from three YSU rules: preceptor information two months before each practicum, notice to the Graduate Clinical Coordinator at least 90 days out if you cannot find a preceptor, and Exxat compliance documents 30 days before a first practicum. Treat them as planning dates, not YSU-published deadlines, and use the summer rows only if your curriculum plan puts a practicum there.

Here is where the calendar pinches. A Spring 1 practicum runs until February 21, yet the preceptor details for a Spring 2 practicum were due January 8, four days after Spring 1 began. The two-month clock runs from the start date of each practicum, so the preceptor details for your next practicum are usually due before your current one has finished its first week.
Questions YSU students ask
Does YSU offer a summer start for the online MSN?
Not for 2026-27 on the online program pages, which list Fall 1, Fall 2, Spring 1 and Spring 2 only. The catalog's accelerated calendar does include two summer 7-week terms, beginning May 10 and June 28, 2027, so summer coursework exists; your curriculum plan shows whether yours uses it. Ask the online admissions team if you had hoped to begin in May.
How many hours a week does a YSU 7-week course take?
YSU's online FAQ says each course carries about 6 hours of content a week and calls for roughly 20 hours a week of study. Practicum terms add clinical time: the FAQ lists 150 hours per practicum, a little over 21 hours a week across seven weeks by our count, while another FAQ line says 180 hours a term. Is there a spring break in YSU's accelerated online terms?
Not a week off inside a term. The regular calendar's spring break is March 1 to 7, 2027, and on the accelerated calendar that week falls in the gap between Spring 1, ending February 21, and Spring 2, starting March 8. The in-term pause is Thanksgiving: no classes November 25 through 27, with classes resuming November 30.
How long does YSU's online FNP program take?
YSU's FNP program page says as few as 22 months, and the graduate handbook says about 22 months full-time or 36 months part-time. A newer FNP timeline article on YSU's online site says as few as 20 months. The school's four-year limit caps the total either way; the grades and time limits guide explains it.
When is YSU's 2026-27 commencement?
The academic calendar lists commencement on December 11 and 12, 2026 and April 30 to May 1, 2027, and points to YSU's commencement page for details. Graduation also happens in August, but the calendar lists no summer ceremony, so ask the College of Graduate Studies which ceremony August graduates join.
