South Central Ohio preceptors for YSU nurse practitioner students
South Central Ohio is rural Appalachia built around four hospital towns: Chillicothe, Portsmouth, Athens and Gallipolis. Every one of its ten counties carries an HRSA primary care shortage designation, so primary care settings are everywhere, but published NP student routes are rare. OhioHealth, at O'Bleness Hospital in Athens, is the only system here with a full application for NP students from outside schools.

Ten counties, four hospital towns
Ohio's hospital preparedness Region 7 covers Ross, Pike, Scioto, Lawrence, Gallia, Meigs, Athens, Hocking, Vinton and Jackson counties, 417,395 people in the 2025 Census estimates. Ross (Chillicothe) and Scioto (Portsmouth) are the largest at 76,429 and 71,365; Vinton, around McArthur, is the smallest at 12,645. Athens belongs here even though many people call it southeast Ohio.
Eight of the ten counties are nonmetro under USDA's 2023 codes, and Pike carries a 9, the most rural code USDA assigns. Lawrence County is coded metro as part of the Huntington-Ashland area, which spans Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. The region sits roughly 180 to 260 miles from Youngstown, a distance an online YSU program seldom notices.
OhioHealth O'Bleness in Athens: the one published NP application
OhioHealth's APP Student Rotation Application takes NP students for any OhioHealth site, O'Bleness Hospital included, and its FAQ lists a Southern Region badge center for O'Bleness and Athens. You can name an OhioHealth preceptor who has already agreed or ask OhioHealth to place you, uploading a resume if you have no preceptor, though placement is not promised. Every semester needs a new application, even with the same preceptor, and decisions come within three weeks of the window closing.

The limit is in the FAQ: OhioHealth says it is not initiating new affiliation agreements. Ask your clinical faculty whether YSU already holds one before applying, then match each 7-week YSU practicum to the OhioHealth semester it falls in. If you are declined for lacking a preceptor and find one later, OhioHealth asks for at least 30 days' notice.
Adena, Holzer, SOMC and King's Daughters
Adena Health anchors the northern counties with Adena Regional Medical Center in Chillicothe and Adena Pike Medical Center in Waverly. Its student education page speaks of shadowing, internships and clinical experience hours in general terms, with no NP process, portal or deadline, so treat Adena as a landmark. Adena took over Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster on September 1, 2026; that hospital, which has its own rotation form, is in the Central Ohio guide.
Portsmouth has two hospitals. Southern Ohio Medical Center is independent, and its public education partnership is with Shawnee State University's nursing program; no NP student page was found. King's Daughters Medical Center Ohio has been part of the University of Kentucky since December 1, 2022, yet the hospital itself is in Ohio, so it counts as an Ohio site for YSU. It posts no Ohio NP student page.
Holzer Health System, in Gallipolis and Jackson, has a clinical students page that search index text describes as taking placement requests from nursing students; whether that includes NP students is unconfirmed, so ask before relying on it. Hocking Valley Community Hospital in Logan and the Chillicothe VA Medical Center post no NP student pages.
Shortage data and the health centers behind it
In HRSA's September 2026 files, every county here has a primary care shortage designation covering a low-income or other population countywide, plus an active mental health designation. Pike, Scioto and Lawrence share the top primary care score of 19.
HRSA also counts 74 active health center sites in the region, 24 of them school-based, run by nine organizations. For FNP hours, these clinics are the backbone of a local search.

- Hopewell Health Centers: 37 sites in seven counties, including Athens, Chillicothe, Gallipolis, Jackson, Logan, McArthur, Nelsonville and Pomeroy
- Ironton and Lawrence County Area Community Action Organization: 13 sites in Ironton, Chesapeake, Proctorville and South Point
- Community Action Committee of Pike County: 11 sites in Waverly, Piketon, Jackson and Portsmouth
- OVP Health Care (4 sites, an FQHC look-alike) and Compass Community Health (3, Portsmouth)
Lining up five practicums from a rural base
YSU's approach is the same across Ohio: you are highly encouraged to find your own preceptor, the details are due two months before each practicum, and if the search fails the Graduate Clinical Coordinator needs 90 days' warning, with no assurance of a nearby site (approval timeline).
Adult primary care sites appear in every county, but the 100 pediatric and 75 women's health hours YSU recommends for NURS 7061 to NURS 7065 need earlier planning: start with school-based sites and family practices that see children and women.
For NURS 7071 to NURS 7075, the larger inpatient hospitals sit in Chillicothe, Portsmouth, Athens and Gallipolis, and YSU's acute care list also counts standalone emergency departments and urgent care. Students in Lawrence County can look across the river into West Virginia, a state YSU accepts; Kentucky is not on YSU's list.
If you work at Adena, SOMC or Holzer, your own employer is allowed, but never your unit, your supervisor or paid time.

Can a YSU NP student apply to OhioHealth O'Bleness Hospital?
OhioHealth's application covers NP students at all its sites, including O'Bleness in Athens. Its FAQ, though, says OhioHealth is not initiating new affiliation agreements, so ask your clinical faculty whether YSU already has one. If so, apply in the window for your practicum's OhioHealth semester.
Is King's Daughters in Portsmouth an Ohio site now that it belongs to the University of Kentucky?
Yes. King's Daughters Medical Center Ohio joined the University of Kentucky on December 1, 2022, but the hospital stands in Portsmouth, so a practicum there is an Ohio practicum under YSU's state rules. It posts no NP student page, and your clinical faculty approve it like any other site.
Can I do YSU clinicals in West Virginia if I live in Lawrence or Gallia County?
West Virginia is accepted for YSU's online graduate nursing programs, so a preceptor across the river can work. Your RN license must cover the state where the hours happen; Ohio and West Virginia both belong to the Nurse Licensure Compact. The site may still need an affiliation agreement with YSU, so start early.
Does Adena Health publish an NP student application?
Not for NP students; its student education page stays general. Adena Fairfield Medical Center in Lancaster, acquired in September 2026, has its own rotation form. For Chillicothe or Waverly, ask your clinical faculty how an Adena NP preceptor would be set up.
