NURS 7063, FNP Practicum 3: reasoning with evidence at the midpoint

Three demands in one catalog sentence

The 2026-27 catalog opens with: "Students refine advanced assessment and diagnostic reasoning skills and apply current evidence to guide clinical decision-making and evaluate patient outcomes." Read it as three linked tasks. Here is what each can look like in a primary care clinic; the examples are our reading, and your syllabus on Blackboard sets the actual assignments.

• Refine the reasoning: NURS 7062 asked for differentials, and now your preceptor should hear why you ruled a diagnosis out as well as why you kept it.
• Ground the plan in evidence: be ready to name the current guideline or study behind a treatment choice rather than relying on how the clinic has always done it.
• Look at outcomes: notice what happened after the visit, such as a result that came back, a symptom that eased or a plan that needed changing at follow-up.

The course keeps the same frame as its neighbors: 2 credits, one 7-week term, taken alone, primary care only. The catalog gives it no hour figure; YSU's FAQ lists 150.

Where Practicum 3 fits best

Primary care remains the rule. Our suggestion, not YSU's: if your women's health primary care hours have not started, schedule them in this term, with one women's health preceptor or split with an adult or gerontology primary care preceptor. YSU lets you divide hours among approved preceptors, and the 2026-27 handbook includes certified nurse-midwives with a master's or doctorate among approved preceptors, which widens the field for this block. The older FAQ lists only MDs, NPs and DOs, so confirm a midwife preceptor with clinical faculty before you commit.

For the outcomes part of the course, favor a practice where patients come back during your seven weeks, such as a clinic that follows chronic conditions over several visits. You learn little about outcomes from a site where you never see the same person twice. The handbook's rules on physician assistants and the rest of the approved list are on preceptor requirements.

Protect the back half of the program

A lost term costs the most from here on, because every later course hangs on this one. NURS 7064 needs a B in NURS 7063, NURS 7065 needs a B in NURS 7064, and the Capstone must be your final course, so a single missed practicum term slides graduation back.

The handbook adds two clocks worth knowing. A gap of two or more 7-week terms in a row can mean an individualized remediation plan before you return, and a break from practicum courses longer than a year (365 days) wipes the slate: every practicum already completed, with its hours, must be repeated. The School of Nursing's four-year limit on the MSN, stricter than the catalog's six, is covered in grades and time limits.
